A practical checklist for your next move
Use this as a preparation framework, then agree the details for your actual job.
Start with the actual inventory
Walk through each room and list the furniture, appliances, boxes and loose items that need to travel. Separate items you will take yourself. Flag fragile, unusually heavy or awkward pieces.
Check access at collection and delivery
- Floor level and number of stair flights.
- Lift size, booking requirements and permitted hours.
- Parking or loading permission and walking distance.
- Shared entrances, narrow turns and doorway concerns.
- Who provides keys and access at each end.
Agree the scope before packing
Ask whether materials, packing, furniture dismantling, reassembly and extra trips are included. If they are needed, get them recorded as part of the quote rather than assuming they come with transport.
Prepare a personal essentials bag
Keep your essential documents, medication, chargers, keys and valuables with you. Label boxes by destination room and keep items needed on arrival accessible.
Before moving day
Reconfirm the date, collection and delivery arrangements, agreed inventory and access plan. Tell the mover if the volume changes or a lift becomes unavailable. Follow the agreed handling and preparation instructions for appliances and specialist items.
For a county-to-county move
Coordinate keys and access at both properties and discuss timing uncertainty before committing to a delivery window. Do not assume a same-day schedule without an agreed plan.
